Below is the snare drum I completed in June 1996. On the left is the block of purpleheart (a dense, tropical hardwood -- pillaging nature in the name of cacophony)
from which the shell was cut; it's a block of 6 cross-laminated, perfectly lathed plys, glued to yield a tension-free shell (which is all the rage in the drumming world).
The finished drum is a bright, versatile piccolo with a wide tuning range, 13" in diameter and just under 4" deep.
The top bearing edge is was hand beveled to 60 degrees (for attack); the bottom is 45 (for "sensitivity," they say). No less than twelve coats of
polyurethane on the shell.

The hardware is borrowed from a Pearl 4 x 13 maple piccolo; which was cannibalized for a very satisfying purpose.
And that's my one and only woodworking project.
